Thakadu and Mertech Partner to Establish Copper Sulphate Plant in South Africa

Thakadu Resources and Mertech Marine have entered into a joint venture to establish a new high-purity copper sulphate plant in South Africa. The new plant, which will be funded equally by both parties, aims to provide a unique, reliable, and responsible source of copper sulphate for the mining, agricultural, and chemical industries in Sub-Saharan Africa. Thakadu, which has pioneered the responsible supply of battery raw materials from South Africa, plans to build and operate the new plant within Mertech Marine’s existing recycling facility in Gqeberha, formerly Port Elizabeth.

Why it Matters:

This joint venture creates a vertically integrated recycling and desciation business in South Africa and has the potential to unlock value through further desciation opportunities. The successful development of the copper sulphate project will open up exciting possibilities such as the production of copper foil for battery anodes and further collaborations in battery recycling. The partnership will contribute to the circular economy and help drive the growth of the green economy. icon
